Acolytes play an important role in the worship service, as both a leader and a helper. The Acolyte’s role is to serve – to help in the presentation of the worship service.

At St. Patrick’s acolytes are typically 5th – 12th graders who participate and help at the 9:30 worship service and at special services throughout the year.

The roles of an acolyte during worship are dynamic and varied. They always join the procession – often as torch bearers or crucifer (the person who carries the cross). They may assist as a member of the altar party by helping to set and clear parts of the altar table; and they ring the sanctus bell during the liturgy to call attention to particular moments. Sometimes, when the priest reads the Gospel from the center of the sanctuary, acolytes may carry torches. Or, they might hold the Gospel Book for the priest, especially on a special occasion. You are a minister! Our acolytes play a formal (but fun!) and important role in worship at St. Patrick’s.
