Music as Part of Worship

The arts play a very important role in Episcopal liturgy. In particular, music serves to elevate the service with a sung Holy Eucharist, as well as beautiful Offertory and Communion anthems. St. Patrick’s highly values the arts as integral parts of the liturgy, offering beauty and depth to our worship, while offering the people copious opportunities to participate in the work of worship. The choir is currently on hiatus.

Our 9:30am Sunday Service offers a Sung Eucharist as well as congregational hymns.

Canon Thomas Neenan

Organist

In 2021 Thomas Neenan retired as Lecturer in Music History and Music Theory at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, where he taught for 30 years. In 2017 he retired from his post as Music Director and Conductor of The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s and Music Director at the Parish of St. Matthew, Pacific Palisades, after 37 years.

At Caltech, Neenan taught a full complement of music courses including a year-long survey of music history, a year-long music theory sequence and a variety of special topics, including music appreciation, jazz history, “The Orchestra: Its History and Conductors,” history of opera, major figures in music, choral-orchestral literature, chamber music, and others. He was honored by the Associated Students of California Institute of Technology with an ASCIT Outstanding Teaching Award.

He has been a featured speaker on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Upbeat Live pre-concert talks and Organ Recital Series for over 25 years.

Neenan holds degrees from California State University, Northridge, and from UCLA, where he was honored with an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award and was a prizewinner in the Atwater-Kent Performance Competition. He includes among his teachers David Britton, Thomas Harmon, Delores Stevens, Jean Langlais, and Ernst-Ulrich von Kameke. As a recital organist he has performed in the United States as well as in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan, and Switzerland.

He enjoys traveling with his wife, Robin, playing golf, scuba diving, and cooking..
